Metro WiFi Network

Organisation

A Tier One European Telecommunications Company with a 600,000 Euro budget

Requirements/ Challenge

The company` s requirements were bold, it didn`t want small hot spots at a few locations around its key city- it wanted the whole city centre completely covered with a seamless Wi-fi network. The challenge therefore presented to bidders was to set up a cost effective wireless network covering 5 square kilometres that users could roam within.

The company had a number of important factors it was taking into account in choosing the right company to fulfil the network demands. The project had to be delivered on time and on budget without compromise. The company also wanted a network that was going to be safe and secure for the provider and customer. Primarily the company wanted the network built on proven, thoroughly tested and completely reliable technology.

The company tested a number of different European and American vendors (including mesh networking companies) in the areas of performance, robustness, security, scalability and network design.

The bidding for this contract involved five companies, what was a major influence in winning the contract was the ability to deliver a wireless ditstribution network solution built using self organising technology, which was delivered with speed and accuracy. The telecom company extensively tested all aspects of the technology and concluded that the proposition designed by WDSI was the solution built on the most reliable technology.

Solution

We rapidly installed and commissioned a high brid WiFi network to the city. Broadcast over the standard 802.11g/b frequency, with optimally placed antennas, base stations and routers across the city.

The installed network was one that automatically maintained roaming user connections, as the network automatically re-organises routes and paths to find the final destination and ensure that connectivity is maintained between cells. The network is fully secure through various levels of encryption at layer two and three, but is open enough to let users connect to the authorisation page.

Benefits

Members of the public can now subscribe to the wireless mesh network to receive wireless internet across the city whilst the company can integrate Voiceover IP, GPS Tracking and Surveillance on its vehicles and communicate quicker and cheaper than before. What is more, it has helped the city obtain a position as an advanced city, attractive for businesses and investment.
